Dog-Friendly Outdoor Activities in Austin
It’s not surprising that Austin is consistently ranked in the top 10 most pet-friendly places in the U.S. Not only do Texans love their pets, but we love to include them in all of our outdoor activities. Whether you’re looking for a new park, trail, hotel, shopping areas, or pet-friendly dining options, we’ve got you (and your happy-go-lucky pet) covered.
The Perks of Parks
Austin boasts many small neighborhood parks that are perfect for meeting new four-legged buddies. If you’ve got a few spots on your well-trodden circuit, we recommend expanding your pet’s horizon’s at any of the following green gems:
- Zilker Metropolitan Park
- Auditorium Shores
- Pease Park
- Emma Long Metropolitan(don’t forget to check out Turkey Creek trail!)
- Red Bud Isle
- Onion Creek Metropolitan Park
- Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park
Most of these beautiful locations have off-leash options. Be sure you’re prepared to encounter all sorts of different dogs and their owners. Have extra waste bags, fresh water, and training treats to make the most out of your visit.
A Mix of Trails
If your pup is ready for a more rugged outing, you can choose between a handful of close options. We recommend that all adventurous dogs be up to date with their vaccinations and parasite prevention medication. To reduce wildlife encounters, train your dog to come when called by name and stay close to you at all times. Once you feel confident about your dog’s ability to listen to commands, here are some great trails to enjoy:
- Violet Crown Trail
- Barton Creek Greenbelt
- Walnut Creek Trail
- Mueller Lake/Southeast Greenway
- Sunset Valley Nature Area
- Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail (check out those views of Lady Bird Lake!)
