We humans start pulling out our sweaters, even here in Austin, TX. The weather change may be subtle, but it\u2019s there. For those of us who share our homes with exotic pets, this shift in weather is an excellent time to check in on their comfort levels.<br><br>Exotic pet care in the fall involves making sure pets stay warm, safe, and stable as the temperatures drop\u2014and the heaters turn on. Here\u2019s what the team at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybeevet.com\/\">BEEVET Animal Hospital<\/a> wants you to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For Reptiles, Warmth is Life\u2014Literally<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Reptiles depend on heat to survive. They can\u2019t create their own body heat, so cooler fall nights can be tricky. Especially if you\u2019re leaving the windows open to soak in some of that (finally!) crisp air.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To meet your reptile\u2019s heating needs in the fall, you may need to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check your pet\u2019s basking lamps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Swap bulbs out for higher wattage lights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adjust the ceramic heaters to a higher setting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you use an accurate, reliable thermometer and hygrometer to keep tabs on the heat and humidity levels inside the enclosure. If you\u2019re unsure what the best temperature is for your species of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybeevet.com\/blog\/wisdom-in-scales-elderly-reptile-care-101\/\">reptile<\/a>, consult with an exotic pet veterinarian (like us!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Feathered Friends Need Cozy Spaces, Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Birds have feathers to help them stay warm, but a blast of dry air from your heater in the morning or a crisp draft from the window in the afternoon can ruffle them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best bird warmth tips are simple:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep cages away from windows or exterior doors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover cages at night for warmth and darkness (with plenty of space for air to circulate)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add a safe, heated perch for birds accustomed to hotter, more humid weather, like tropical birds\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With the right fall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybeevet.com\/blog\/avian-pets-bird-flight-and-feather-care\/\">bird care<\/a>, you can enjoy happy chirps all season long. Generally, most birds do best at temperatures between 65\u00b0F and 80\u00b0F.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re unsure about whether the home is too cold\u2014or hot\u2014for your avian friend, reach out to your exotic pet veterinarian.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Small, Sensitive Noses and Toes-es<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mybeevet.com\/blog\/small-pets-what-are-pocket-pets\/\">Small mammals<\/a> like sugar gliders, chinchillas, gerbils, guinea pigs, and hamsters can be surprisingly sensitive to cooler air. They might <em>look <\/em>cozy and warm in their fur, but just one draft from an open window or exterior door can quickly drop the temperature in their cages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chinchillas do best in cooler conditions (50\u00b0F to 60\u00b0F), and they should be shielded from hot blasts from the heater.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs, on the other hand, anything below 60\u00b0F is dangerously cold. When these pets get too cold, they may slip into a hibernation-like state\u2014torpor\u2014which is dangerous and can even be fatal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to fall pet safety for these small mammals is to keep their enclosures in a draft-free area of the home. Offer deep bedding for burrowing and make sure the temperatures in the room and in the enclosure stay between 65\u00b0F and 75\u00b0F.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For sugar gliders, warmer temperatures are important (75\u00b0F to 85\u00b0F is their sweet spot).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Comfortable Season for Every Creature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter your best efforts, the cold can sometimes affect your exotic pet and cause symptoms like lethargy, loss of appetite, and sluggishness.
