Sometimes, though, what makes us the best lies not only in what we do, but also in what we don\u2019t do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of June this year, we will no longer be offering feline declawing as an elective procedure. In accordance with <a href=\"https:\/\/catvets.com\/guidelines\/position-statements\/declawing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AAFP guidelines<\/a>, we have decided that this procedure is not in the best interest of our whiskered patients. So what\u2019s a pet owner to do? Not to worry, there are so many things to consider before and as alternatives to declawing your cat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reasons Not To Declaw<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feline declawing has long been banned in places like Europe, and for good reason. This procedure involves the surgical removal of the ends of the toes at the first joint and is often looked at as inhumane once <a href=\"https:\/\/pawproject.org\/about-declawing\/declaw-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the actual procedure<\/a> is explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Declawing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Has no medical advantage to the cat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disrupts normal feline behaviors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Can lead to chronic pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has been <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/1098612X17705044\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shown to lead to other problems<\/a> such as inappropriate urination and increased aggression in cats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When it comes down to it, we don\u2019t believe it is worth it to declaw our feline patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternatives to Declawing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a little patience and knowledge, it is totally possible to love and enjoy cats who still have all their parts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important thing to do is to set your cat up for success. Scratching is a part of being a cat, and <a href=\"https:\/\/indoorpet.osu.edu\/cats\/basicneeds\/scratching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">providing appropriate scratching surfaces<\/a> in your home and good <a href=\"https:\/\/catfriendly.com\/cat-care-at-home\/routine-caregrooming\/nail-trimming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nail care including trimming<\/a> every 1-2 weeks can go a long way.
